Spotlight II is the second exhibition from Black Folks in Design. This second showcase curated by Little Wing Lee of Studio & Projects is an exercise in range, scale, and perspective, and also a celebration of the talent and creativity of the Black design community.

Throughout the curatorship, each piece speaks its own aesthetic language driven by narrative, story, and process, that each designer expresses uniquely. From rooted and novel expressions of historic and local craft techniques to a total reimagining of a local craft tradition in an entirely new material and technique, to embracing the sustainable use of materials to seek unexpected forms. The designs are the result of the intersection and interaction of multiple historical design traditions across geographies and cultures, made from raw and salvaged materials.

“As I built this show, it was inspiring to see the common threads between these pieces reveal themselves over time. Most heartening, perhaps, was to discover and build the community between so many of us, which is ultimately the goal of Black Folks inDesign, as a collective” says Little Wing Lee, founder of Black Folks in Design.

The exhibition features works by Asmite, Robell Awake, Jonas Damon, Jerome Harris, Mabeo Furniture, Nifemi Marcus-Bello, Garth Roberts, Studio & Projects, and Norman Teague. Featured contributions span mediums from floral installations and graphic design to hand-crafted furniture and rhythmic textiles.
