Lisa Hunt @creativehunt is a Maplewood, New Jersey-based artist and designer. Her screen printed and collaged works on paper and panel explore the spatial and meditative relationships found within repeat patterns. Through the use of graphic shapes and symbols, Hunt’s work draws inspiration from a broad range of influences including West African textiles, African American quilt-making, typography and the Art Deco movement. Hunt’s work draws a connection to adornment throughout history while commenting on contemporary materialism and value by accenting her primarily neutral palette with gold leaf.

Kyle Scott Lee @ceramicmeltdown was born in White Plains, NY and currently resides in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He creates voluptuous vessels and well-turned cups that provide the canvas for his unique hand painting and surface treatments. Kyle’s practice has included teaching over the years at Educational Alliance Art School and other institutions. Kyle has studied ceramics in multiple studios throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY and has exhibited in solo and group gallery exhi-bitions in New York City and abroad. His work can also be found in private collections in London, France, New York, Pittsburgh, Texas and North Caroli-na. Over his 15 years as a ceramicist, Kyle has developed his unique style of ceramic art incorporating traditional shapes with a colorful and abstract sense of design and glaze application.

Kyle is a founding member of BKLYN CLAY and the first recipient of the BKLYN CLAY Residency. He is currently a partnered designer with West Elm and Chairish.

Lee creates ceramics using White Stoneware Clay and paints them with a sprayed layer of white underglaze (much like a painter gesso’s a canvas) to create a blank surface in which to paint upon. The pieces are then colored with brush strokes of vibrantly colored underglazes with wax resisted shapes and symbolism. The pieces are glazed with a clear, transparent glaze and then fired in an electric kiln.

"I am truly honored to be the recipient of the Female Design Council and Nicole Hollis grant. I see this grant as an investment in my talent and skill that will help me establish the foundation I need to thrive as a Black woman in the design business. Receiving this incredible support and the recognition is a wonderful investment in my studio. I'm looking forward to using a portion of the award to fund two product development projects we initiated earlier this year: a rug design collaboration and a small furniture collection. We're at an inflection point, and this grant will give me the opportunity and momentum to build and invest in future projects.”

Althea McNish: Colour is Mine

In 1950, Althea McNish and her mother Margaret travelled to England on the SS Columbie, disembarking at Southampton on 9th November 1950. They had left their home in Trinidad to join Joseph McNish, Althea’s father, who had settled in London the previous year to set up a publishing venture.

Like many of her Caribbean contemporaries, McNish reconciled herself to the fact that in order to develop her career she would have to emigrate. At the same time, she never lost her longing for home, referencing Trinidad in the patterns and names of her designs.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, Kwame Brathwaite used his photography to popularize the political slogan “Black Is Beautiful.” This monograph—the first ever dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career—tells the story of a key, but under-recognized, figure of the second Harlem Renaissance.
Inspired by the writings of activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, Brathwaite, along with his older brother, Elombe Brath, founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models (1962). AJASS was a collective of artists, playwrights, designers, and dancers; Grandassa Models was a modeling troupe for black women, founded to challenge white beauty standards. From stunning studio portraits of the Grandassa Models to behind-the-scenes images of Harlem’s artistic community, including Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Miles Davis, this book offers a long-overdue exploration of Brathwaite’s life and work.

About
Black Folks
In Design

Black Folks in Design (BFiD) is a network that connects Black designers to ourselves, both within and across disciplines, in order to support each other and share professional opportunities. We seek to expose the historical and current mastery and excellence of Black designers to the broader design community and relevant stakeholders, and ultimately create economic and portfolio- building opportunities for Black designers. Black Folks in Design is unique in that it connects Black designers across the world from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to architecture, fashion, interior design, graphic design, etc. BFiD creates opportunities for Black designers to connect in-person in thoughtful and beautiful spaces. We also provide resources to help the broader design community and our society understand the critical role of Black designers, acknowledge and identify them, and hire them. Design is part of our everyday lives – from the clothes, we put on in the morning to the toys we buy for our children to the offices and schools we work in every day. Black designers are a part of the group of aesthetic decision-makers and problem-solvers who create culture, content, and products that shape and change the world. Essentially, Black designers matter. We help the world see that.
